Year-Round Sun Safety: Sun Protection After Aesthetic Treatments to Protect Your Skin and Your Results

At Charm Medical Aesthetics in Middle River, MD, we know that proper sun protection is a key component of any skincare routine. Protecting your skin from the sun is the best way to maintain healthy, glowing skin and preserve the results of your aesthetic treatments.

When you invest in treatments like Botox, fillers, microneedling, or chemical peels, protecting your skin from UV rays is critical to maintaining your results and avoiding premature aging.

Understanding UVA & UVB Rays and Their Role in Sun Protection After Aesthetic Treatments

Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays differ primarily in their wavelength ranges and their biological effects on the skin.

UVA rays have wavelengths ranging from 320 to 400 nm. They account for about 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth's surface. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, affecting the dermis and various cell types. UVA is less carcinogenic than UVB but contributes significantly to photoaging, oxidative DNA damage, and indirect DNA damage.[1-4]

UVB rays have shorter wavelengths, ranging from 280 to 320 nm, and make up about 5% of the UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface. UVB rays primarily affect the epidermis, causing direct DNA damage which can lead to mutations and skin cancer. UVB is more carcinogenic than UVA and is responsible for sunburn and the formation of pre-vitamin D3 in the skin.[1][3-5]

The Importance of SPF

Sun exposure accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which leads to:

  • Fine lines

  • Wrinkles

  • Dark spots (hyperpigmentation)

  • Loss of skin firmness

Even if it’s cloudy or you’re indoors, harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin and cause damage over time. This is why applying sunscreen every day is crucial, no matter the season.
